A Door Left Open for Butterflies

We joked. We laughed. She waltzed out in the morning and trudged back in the afternoon. After an early afternoon snack, we tried to cook our next meal. I set up the kitchen table. She started a fire on the stove. If only for the safety of us, we decided to eat ramen and remember the past. As if quoting a line from a movie she said, “I wish I knew how to quit you.” Laughter. Then we washed the dishes and placed the clean bowls up. And moonlight beamed like a warm candle.
