When I was growing up, my first experience with the LGBTQ+ community was through fanfiction. While there were people in my family who were part of the community, it wasn’t something that was talked about. Since I live in the South, it wasn’t talked about in schools either. However, fanfiction served as my entry point to learning about the community at a young age.

This introduction led me to search for books at my school library when I went to middle school, and I came across more information about sexuality and gender. Nowadays, with a much better internet connection, and Buzzfeed and other websites releasing lists on this topic almost every month, I have discovered so many YA books featuring LGBTQ+ characters. There is so much variation to the books being released, and below, I am sharing 20 of the books from 2020 and 2021 which have caught my interest.

All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson (Memoir/Biography)

Summary

In a series of personal essays, prominent journalist and LGBTQIA+ activist George M. Johnson explores his childhood, adolescence, and college years in New Jersey and Virginia. From the memories of getting his teeth kicked out by bullies at age five, to flea marketing with his loving grandmother, to his first sexual relationships, this young-adult memoir weaves together the trials and triumphs faced by Black queer boys.

Summary
